The world’s greatest superpower is not the United States … or Russia … or China, says Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. It’s Iran.

“Iran is the number one power in the world,” Ahmadinejad said Thursday in a speech to the families of those killed in his country’s war with Iraq more than 20 years ago.

Economy Slows Down to Nearly a Crawl…

WASHINGTON (AP) — The economy skidded to a near halt in the final quarter of last year, clobbered by dual slumps in housing and credit that caused people and businesses to spend and invest more sparingly.

The Commerce Department reported Thursday that the gross domestic product increased at a scant 0.6 percent pace in the October-to-December quarter. The reading — unchanged from an initial estimate a month ago — underscored just how much momentum the economy has lost. In the prior quarter, the economy clocked in at a brisk 4.9 percent pace.

Virtual Fence on Arizona’s Border Delayed…

The Bush administration has scaled back plans to quickly build a “virtual fence” along the U.S.-Mexico border, delaying completion of the first phase of the project by at least three years and shifting away from a network of tower-mounted sensors and surveillance gear, federal officials said yesterday.

Technical problems discovered in a 28-mile pilot project south of Tucson prompted the change in plans, Department of Homeland Security officials and congressional auditors told a House subcommittee.
